About

I am a community artist and educator with over 20 years experience. In all my roles and projects, I aim to use creative practice to enrich lives and promote social change. I endeavour to provoke a response in participants and the audience that makes them stop, think and question, possibly shifting opinions or inspiring them to challenge the status quo through their conversations and actions.
In the last 12 months my work has developed around changing migration narratives and challenging xenophobic representations and inhumane developments in government policy. I have been working closely with Care4Calais, local community groups and other voluntary organisations to develop projects and activities that build relationships between immigrant and host communities facilitating opportunities for exchange of skill, knowledge and culture (transculturation) in both directions, an idea initiated by Tania Bruguera in her 2019 “School of Integration”.

Testimonials

From Progress Schools (Pupil Referral Unit/ Alternative Education)

I just wanted to let you know how fantastic it has been having Lara do the mosaics with our students. Our students can be very complex, often putting barriers up to new experiences. I was very happy to see some of our most reluctant students find a way to participate. Lara’s background meant that she has the experience of communicating with them in very relaxed manner and understood why certain students behaved in a particular way. This meant the whole project ran in a very relaxed way. Some students accessed it more fully that others but even the ones who only participated on the fringes, did seem to get a good experience.

One student couldn’t believe you can make money from making so a whole career opened up in front of him. “You can sell these? How much would I get for mine?”. It was great to see the penny drop that there are other avenues that may be unusual to them, but actually can be creative career choices.

I am so impressed by the pieces the students have made. Some of the designs are so intricate and you can see the detailed work they have put in to it.

Thank you so much for selecting Progress Schools Gorton for this project. We have found this to be such an amazing way of connecting with craft of a higher level. The staff loved it too! I do hope you would consider us for future projects. The students at this school so need an opportunity for other opportunities to enrich their experience of education.
